Net Safety

Ideas for Safe Surfing

  •  Monitor what your children are watching. Be Involved and know what they are doing online.
  • Place your computer in a family room, kitchen, or area where adults are present.
  • Install a filter on your computer that sifts out harmful material. (See www.TopTenREVIEWS.com for internet filter reviews).
  • Use Chat Rooms, Newsgroups, Instant Messenger etc... with caution (children always supervised).
  • Teach children not to be ashamed if they accidentally pull up a bad site but to shut the monitor off and get a parent.
  • If someone gets caught in the mouse trap (where harmful material has continuous links so when you close your web browser another web page launches with more harmful material on it) then CTRL+ALT+DEL and END Task. If that does not work, restart your computer.
  • Supervise young children on Internet ALWAYS
  • Get educated about your computer. Take a class, read a book and learn enough to understand how the basics work.
  • Monitor amount of time spent on the Internet by your children and also the time of day they are online.
  • Educate your children about the harmful material available on the Internet. Help them develop strategies on how to deal with bad web sites should they find one.
  • Always go on-line with a purpose and a focus.
  • Teach children to never give out private information over the Internet. Pedophiles can locate children with as little as two obscure pieces of information such as school mascot and their first name. Have children use nicknames on the Internet.
  • Establish an open relationship with your children so they can talk about anything with you.
  • Be aware of your children's school policies regarding Internet use. Make changes if you don't feel they meet your standards.
