2009 Speaker Biographies


Donna Rice Hughes, President of Enough Is Enough (EIE), is an internationally known Internet safety expert and advocate. As a respected leader of national efforts to protect children from sexual predators and Internet pornography, Donna has championed EIE's mission to make the Internet safer for children and families since the group's formation in 1994. In September 2005, EIE, a non-profit educational organization (http://www.enough.org), launched The National Internet Safety Awareness and Parental Empowerment Program with the U.S. Department of Justice and other partners. The Program educates and empowers parents and other adult caregivers to protect the children in their care from Internet dangers. Donna also created and developed the Internet safety website, http://www.protectkids.com. Donna is a member of the 2006 Virginia Attorney General's Youth Internet Safety Task Force. She currently serves on the advisory board for the GetNetWise initiative, the National Cyber Security Alliance, the "Take a Bite Out of Cyber Crime" campaign, as well as the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's advisory committee addressing social networking issues.  Donna received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of South Carolina and graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She is married to Jack Hughes and has two stepchildren, Sean and Mindy.

Wendy Maltz, LCSW, DST
is an internationally recognized certified therapist, educator, and lecturer, with more than thirty years of clinical experience. She is a leading expert on healing from sexual abuse, healthy sexuality, and recovery from porn addiction. Wendy’s work is widely considered at the cutting edge of her field of expertise. She has been hailed by Dr. Patrick Carnes, a leader in the sexual addiction field, as “one of our most gifted healers.” Wendy’s most recent book, coauthored with Larry, is The Porn Trap: The Essential Guide to Overcoming Problems Caused by Pornography. A compassionate and comprehensive resource, it is the first book to fully devote itself explaining the nature and course of porn problems, and describing the steps necessary for quitting porn and healing relationships harmed by it. Her other books include The Sexual Healing Journey, Private Thoughts, Passionate Hearts, Intimate Kisses, and Incest & Sexuality. Wendy’s highly acclaimed videos are Relearning Touch and Partners in Healing. Wendy is co-director with her husband Larry Maltz LCSW, an esteemed therapist with more than 25 years of experience, of Maltz Counseling Associates in Eugene, Oregon.

Jill C. Manning, Ph.D.
is a licensed marriage & family therapist who specializes in research and clinical work related to pornography and problematic sexual behavior. Dr. Manning is the author of What’s the Big Deal about Pornography?: A Guide for the Internet Generation, as well as numerous academic journal articles and book chapters.  She has been featured in documentaries, radio talk shows and television programs, including an appearance on Fox News.  Dr. Manning is a member of the UCAP Board and also serves on the Internet Safety Council for Enough is Enough.  A native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, she currently resides in Colorado with her husband and baby daughter.

Dan Gray, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker specializing in addictions counseling. He has a master's degree in social work and is a CSAT (Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist). He is also certified as an addictions counselor with the National Association of Forensic Counselors. He maintains a busy private practice, lecturing regularly and providing training and consultation to numerous civic, religious, and professional organizations throughout the country. In addition, he is the clinical director of the LifeSTAR Network program, which provides help for individuals and couples from around the country who are dealing with problems related to sexual addictions and compulsive behaviors. He co-authored the books Discussing Pornography Problems with a Spouse and Confronting Pornography. Dan is married and the father of four, He enjoys fly fishing, hiking, biking and basically, anything outdoors.

M. Deborah Corley, PhD, is co- founder and co-owner of Santé Center for Healing and provides on-going clinical consultation to Sante's treatment team. She is winner of the Carnes Award in 1999 and Clinician’s Most Valuable Article Award both in 1999 and 2001 for her work on disclosure on which the book Disclosing Secrets: What, to Whom, and How Much to Reveal is based. She is a previous president of the Society of the Advancement for Sexual Health and is currently an advisor to the Board. Deborah has over 25 years experience working with and conducting research on addictive disorders, problematic sexual behaviors, and high risk families. 

Dr. Jason Carroll is an associate professor in the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota and completed a M.S. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Brigham Young University. Dr. Carroll is a nationally-recognized researcher, scholar, and educator.  Recently, Dr. Carroll served as a Visiting Scholar for the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  In 2008, Dr. Carroll published the first national study of pornography patterns among young adults in the United States  Dr. Carroll is the lead instructor of the popular Preparation for Marriage (“Marriage Prep”) at Brigham Young University - a course that services over 1,500 students a year. A highly sought-after public speaker, Dr. Carroll's work has been featured in USA Today, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The LA Times, Psychology Today Magazine, National Public Radio, and other popular media outlets. Dr. Carroll has been married for 15 years and he and his wife Stefani are the blessed parents of five children. 

The Honorable Mark L. Shurtleff was re-elected as the Utah Attorney General in November 2008 with a strong 70% of the vote; and is now serving as the first three-term attorney general in Utah history. In his first 8 years in office, the number of meth labs in Utah was reduced by 98%and he has talked to thousands of students and parents about the dangers of drugs and led the effort to obtain millions of dollars in funding for education and rehabilitation.  His Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force has received national recognition and since Shurtleff has been in office, over 500 Internet predators and child pornographers have been arrested and convicted (with a 99% conviction rate.) The number of sex offenders in Utah prisons has increased by more than 50%. In addition, Attorney General Shurtleff has toured the state and helped develop technology to teach parents and children how to be safe online.  Shurtleff set up Utah's AMBER Alert, which became a model for the nation and has received national awards, and he led the development of the first statewide Child Abduction Response Team. Prior to becoming attorney general, Shurtleff served as a Salt Lake County Commissioner and prosecuted cases as an Officer and Attorney in the U.S. Navy.  Most importantly, he and his wife, M’Liss, have been married 27 years and are the parents of five children and one grandchild.

David S. Wood, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist who currently works as the research and evaluation specialist for LDS Family Services. David completed clinical training in addictive disorders with an emphasis on motivational interviewing and has maintained active clinical work with addiction populations for several years. His experience includes clinical work in Veterans Affairs and university hospitals, a law enforcement agency and as a therapist and agency director in Chicago Illinois with LDS Family Services where he has treated many individuals and couples affected by pornography problems. He and wife Cristy are the parents of four children.

 Geoff Steurer, MS, LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice in St. George, Utah. He has over 10 years of experience working as a marriage and family therapist in a variety of clinical settings.  He is the executive director of LifeSTAR of St. George, Utah (www.lifestarstgeorge.com), a three-phase addiction recovery program for couples and individuals affected by pornography and sexual addiction.  Geoff frequently writes and presents on the subjects of marriage and addiction recovery.  Many of his articles and presentations are available to download on his website www.lovingmarriage.com.  He has been married for 12 years to Jody Young Steurer. They are the parents of three boys.

Dr. Jeff Robinson is psychotherapist and licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who practices in Orem, Utah. He specializes in treatment with individuals who have same-sex attractions. He also works with other compulsive sexual behaviors. His counseling often includes parents, spouses of those struggling with these issues. He and his wife Wendy are the parents of eight children.
