Perhaps the most consistent finding of pornography studies to date is that there is a sizeable gap that exists between men and women when it comes to their personal use and acceptance of pornography. This “porn gap” raises a number of questions about dating patterns and the relationship dynamics that arise between men and women related to pornography use. In this presentation will summarize the findings in recent studies that examines romantic partners’ pornography use and pornography-related conflict among committed couples. In particular, this presentation will look at new research on “pornography concealment” – a pattern that is common in many dating and married relationships and is proving to be harmful to relationships, even with casual pornography use.

Jason S. Carroll, Ph.D. is the Associate Director of the Wheatley Institution and a Professor in the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University. He received his Ph.D. from the highly regarded Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Carroll is an internationally-recognized researcher and educator in the areas of successful relationships, healthy sexuality, relationship readiness among young adults, and the harms of pornography. Dr. Carroll’s work has also been featured in the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the LA Times, Newsweek, USA Today, Psychology Today Magazine, National Public Radio, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and other popular media and news outlets. In 2014, Dr. Carroll received the Berscheid-Hatfield Award for Distinguished Mid-Career Achievement, a biennial award given for distinguished scientific achievement by the International Association for Relationship Research (IARR).

Dr. Carroll has authored over 100 scientific articles, book chapters, and public scholarship pieces; and has presented numerous papers at national and international conferences. Dr. Carroll currently serves on the editorial board for three journals: Emerging Adulthood, Family Relations, and the Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy.
