Lu Duke, CMHC, CSAT, CDWF
Therapist, Encouraging Connections Counseling
I love to teach how shame sabotages the recovery process, and help those struggling realize that they are not worth-less than others. I will share the concepts of how we “armor up” to protect ourselves; the courage it takes to be vulnerable and to keep trying when we don’t feel like we’re making any progress or we fail outright in our attempts at things – like recovery. Self-compassion (not self-esteem) and empathy are key to working a successful recovery program. We all want and need social support and to be connected to others. “So the opposite of addiction is not sobriety. It is human connection.” (Johann Hari, 2015 “Chasing the Scream: The First and last Day of the War on Drugs”).
