The Road to Recovery

Tyler Patrick

Shame is a universal emotion that we all experience. Shame tells us that we are not enough and that nobody will love us if they see our weaknesses. In addiction and betrayal trauma, learning to identify and respond to the experience of shame is key to finding long term healing and success in recovery.
This presentation will define what shame is and outline the common cycle as it applies to addiction, help participants identify how it manifests itself in their lives, show how it affects their lives and relationships, and teach skills to cope with shame and live more whole-heartedly. Principles that will be discussed include practicing mindfulness and critical awareness, looking at life through a bigger context, acting with courage to speak shame in meaningful ways, practicing the skill of empathy, and embracing vulnerability as a tool for connection and necessary part of life.
