A Public Health Approach to Pornography

It is often said that pornography is a significant public health issue, but what exactly does it take, and what does it mean, for something to be considered a public health issue?  This session addresses some of the tenants of public health and what it means to use a public health frame to understand and talk about pornography both as problem and in strategizing solutions.

Cordelia Anderson, MA, has been working on prevention for forty years. In 1976, she founded her own business, Sensibilities Prevention Service. Anderson has conducted over 2,500 presentations nationally and internationally on a wide variety of prevention related topics. She currently is under contract with Just Beginning Collaborative to do a mapping report and on-line platform of child sexual abuse services. Through CALCASA-Prevent Connect she co-hosts the Ending Child Sexual Abuse web conference series. In 2014, she wrote a play, “Fired Up”, based on the stories of 5 adult survivors of child sexual abuse/exploitation who toured and performed the piece. She is on the Board of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, the prevention committee for Association for Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA) and MN-HTTF. Anderson is the founder and past-president of the National Coalition for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse & Exploitation. In 2013, she was awarded one of NSVRC’s Vision Awards. Cordelia’s 2011 booklet, “Impact of Pornography on Children, Youth and Culture” (NEARI Press) is being updated and will be released again in 2017. Her focus on pornography is as a public health issue.
